Scientists have recently warned that one of Antarctica's largest ice shelves, called Larsen C, is about to divide in two. An ice shelf is a permanent, floating sheet of ice that is attached to land. The huge crack in Larsen C suddenly grew much longer last month. Now only 20km of ice holds the two parts together. Since Larsen C's ice already floats in the ocean, the gig break-of won't immediately raise global sea levels. However, if the shelf collapses, the ice could flow into the sea and contribute to rising sea levels.
